This is an alternative Amber based on a period of history where the Age of Exploration and the Renaissance overlapped, yet an alternative world where sorcery is more powerful and strange things exist in the basements of Prague Castle and the Hofburg in Vienna. This was a period of history when there was a blossoming of new ideas. Science and magic were still similarly viewed as dangerous and practiced by academics, nobles and clergy. Contemporaries include - Tycho Brahe, Dr. Dee, Elizabeth Tudor, Galileo Galilei, Henri V, Baron Francis Bacon, even Shakespeare and the teenaged Richelieu.
Playing an Archduke or Archduchess von Hapsburg - one of the children of Maximillian II including both Rudolf and Matthias is open to each player. There are other options including illegitimate children and also other interesting characters with a unique story.
Bear in mind that while the greater and lesser clergy and nobility may practice many of the "dark arts", it is something that is practiced discreetly unless one wants to be labelled as a Saint or Evildoer. Even in history, Rudolf's esoteric interests and practices provoked much suspicion.
Characters will start with 100 point characters and the traditional ADRPG rules. Pattern is not available to start with... yet.
Non-Hapsburg character concepts can be entertained. Sorcery, Conjuring, Power Words, Danger Sense, even Shape Changing is available.
