A Magician's Will
Five months ago, your friend Mina Sharp was found dead in her Detroit apartment. She was only 22 at the time, so the massive heart attack that felled her was a lightning strike on a sunny day. Still, the police found no definite signs of foul play and her parents buried her with her grand parents at the White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Bloomfield hills. Perhaps you attended. Perhaps you were too busy with your own life at the time.
You met each other in the mid 2000s; you ran in overlapping circles within the science fiction community of southeastern Michigan, but it was the release of Austin Blackman's "The Hidden College" in 2009 that really brought you together. While others found the book interesting and original, collectively you found it vital. You spent hours discussing it with each other, writing fanfic, running roleplaying games in the setting. Mina, the youngest of you, was 15 at the time and matched each of you for passion, insight and pure obsession.
Last week, Hugh Tombo contacted you. He was a member of your "Hidden College" clique and apparently the executor of Mina's estate. He's vague about the specifics, but apparently Mina left each of you a fortune. He persuaded you and paid for your ticket, so you're once more at a science fiction convention in Michigan. Hugh just texted, he'll arrive in moments.
